B’ham Fall Ball: To all refs and wanna be refs

From Tom Lewis, of the BYLL:

If you are getting this email, it is because you either reffed lax last year or are interested in being one this year (boys and girls). Fall Ball starts a week from this sunday at the Mountain Brook Sports Park. This is a GREAT opportunity for the more experienced guys and girls to share their knowledge with the new folks and for the new folks to “cut their teeth” in an informal setting.

That said, I am asking each of you to help the league out and help yourselves become better lax refs by coming out to the 6 weeks of fall ball and ref the scrimmages that will be played.

The way it works is that the youngest players (u11) will kick off at 1:30 each of the sundays (there are 6 sundays, starting with sunday 9/30), followed by the u13 and then girls and HS at 4:30. The idea is for new refs to shadow more experienced ones on the field and then to take the lead and get advice and pointers from the experienced ones.

Don’t be intimidated. This is new to many of you and it is expected that you will be “green”, but what a great way to get acclimated.

So, that said, i am trying to make sure that all the scrimmages are covered with refs. There are 6 sundays. Please send me an email as to which Sundays that you will be there and are willing to ref. For the new ones, just a whistle and a shirt is all you need. It is really important for those of you who want to ref this Spring, that you participate on several of the sundays to prepare for the spring.

Please email me (don’t hit reply all, just send it to me) and let me know what sundays you can be expected. It would sure be easier if you can commit to the entire afternoon and get comfortable with reffing different age levels. You will see that there is a big difference in the way you ref a u11 game then how you ref a high school game.

Thanks and hope to see ALL of you there.
